5 Street Style Tips
Before going over the Top Five Tips for putting together a great street style look, let’s look at defining what street style is, exactly. You hear it all the time, but what does it really mean?
Street Style is YOUR style. Yes, you. It isn’t curated by designers in studios. It comes from the everyday fasionista: Urban, Punk, Hipster, Feminine, and countless other styles and subcultures in cities across the country and around the world contribute to what is now known as Street Style.
Here are my top five tips for putting together and AMAZING Street Style look.
1. FORGET THE RULES
Street style is about expressing yourself. Who can tell you how best to express yourself, besides yourself? No one. If you like it, Rock it. Simple, right? Another rule to forget about, which really isn’t a rule, but something I’ve seen my beautiful tall queens worry about is: “I can’t wear heels. I’ll be too tall.” Stop it!! Heels are sexy and you look good in them too. There is NO SUCH THING as being too tall.

2. EXPERIMENT / MIX PATTERNS
Whenever I go shopping, I always try something on that I think looks interesting on the hanger, even if I don’t necessarily think it looks great. The way things look on the hanger can be completely different than how it looks once you try it on. Moral of the story, TRY IT ON! Then you can make the decision as to whether you like it or not. I LOVE to experiment with patterns while styling. The looks you can achieve from mixing patterns can be to die for. I love a good pattern mixing outfit. Especially since I’ve realized most of the garments hanging in my closet are patterned, learning to successfully mix patterns gave me that many more options for outfits. It may seem scary at first. Baby steps. It’s worth it.
3. MAKE IT POP
Statement pieces. I always like to have something that stands out with my outfits. Be it a statement accessory or a statement garment, always try to choose something that can turn a seemingly simple outfit into a chic stylish look. It doesn’t have to be busy. Sometimes choosing a monochromatic outfit from head to toe can turn your whole body into a statement piece. Another way to make it pop is by using a POP of color. It is an easy way to take a simple look to the next level.
4. DON’T BREAK THE BANK
Before you rush out to the store after an afternoon of scrolling Instagram, Pinterest, or your favorite Tall Blogger’s website (me, I’d hope, **cough**), take a look in your closet. I wish I had the ability to never have to wear anything more than once, but I don’t. I’m guessing the majority of you are in the same boat. Learn to use your basics as a foundation for mixing and matching, layering in the autumn/winter seasons, and get the most out of your closet. Don’t feel pressured into draining your pocket for a specific look.
5. GET INSPIRATION
Take advantage of the resources online to help you get a better feel for what you like. The goal is not to mimic. The goal is to get inspiration that will allow you to really develop what your personal style is. If you’re a tall girl like me, Tall Blogs are essentially helpful because in addition to gaining inspiration from their looks, you’re able to see how they’re able to navigate in a fashion world that wasn’t made for us. You know if she can fit those pants, you can too, and she’ll tell you wear you can find them. (Or check out my latest series titled Style Stretch that recreates looks for us tall ladies. Find out more HERE.)
Thanks so much for stopping by! I’m looking forward to seeing you look chic in the street!
